Severe debilitating dysmenorrhea
Severe debilitating dysmenorrhea refers to extreme menstrual pain that interferes with daily life. While mild menstrual cramps are common, women with severe dysmenorrhea often experience excruciating pain in the lower abdomen, lower back, or thighs, sometimes accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and headaches. Dr Abdul Basith's focus is on identifying the root cause of the pain and providing effective treatment to help women manage their symptoms and lead normal, pain-free lives.
Dysmenorrhea can be classified as primary or secondary. Primary dysmenorrhea is usually linked to prostaglandins, hormones that trigger uterine contractions during menstruation. Secondary dysmenorrhea is often due to underlying conditions like endometriosis, fibroids, or pelvic inflammatory disease. Dr Basith conducts a comprehensive assessment, including medical history, pelvic examinations, and imaging tests, to pinpoint the exact cause of the debilitating pain.
Once diagnosed, treatment is tailored to the individual. For women with primary dysmenorrhea, pain management may involve non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. Hormonal treatments, such as oral contraceptives or hormonal IUDs, are also effective in reducing pain by regulating the menstrual cycle. In cases of secondary dysmenorrhea caused by conditions like endometriosis or fibroids, laparoscopic surgery may be recommended to remove the problematic tissue or growths.
