Sperm freezing
Sperm freezing, or sperm cryopreservation, is a highly effective method for preserving male fertility. Offered at Dr. Abdul Basith’s clinic, sperm freezing is ideal for men who wish to safeguard their ability to father children in the future, particularly those undergoing medical treatments such as chemotherapy or surgery that may affect sperm production. It is also suitable for men who wish to delay fatherhood due to personal or professional reasons.
The sperm freezing process begins with the collection of a semen sample, either through natural ejaculation or surgical sperm retrieval in cases of azoospermia (absence of sperm in ejaculate). The semen is then analysed to assess sperm count, motility, and morphology. Once the sample is deemed suitable for freezing, it is mixed with a cryoprotectant to prevent damage during freezing and then stored at ultra-low temperatures using vitrification, a method that ensures higher survival rates of the sperm once thawed.
Sperm freezing provides men with long-term fertility preservation, allowing them to father children later in life when they are ready. Frozen sperm can be stored for several years without losing its viability, making it a flexible option for men facing temporary or permanent fertility risks.
When the time comes to use the frozen sperm, it is thawed and used in assisted reproductive techniques such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilisation (IVF), depending on the fertility needs of the couple.
